I have an apology to make...

This person said to me "sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry"

I said "that's really annoying".

They said "I know, I can only apologise."

Oh my - the sun’s just raised its head! After weeks of rain and wind I was starting to sprout gills and consider a wetsuit as my new summer wardrobe!

This time last year I was sunbathing; the guarantee of sunshine came almost daily.

Fast forward to 2021 and we have seen more rain than the average for May… and it could be my fault.

I’ll explain…

Sod's law is an axiom predominantly used in British culture to indicate – rather ironically/amusingly - that sometimes things will happen at the worst possible time and in the worst possible place; also the colloquialism term of being an ‘unlucky sod’.

So, I can only think that this year’s spring deluges are due to Sods Law as I’d only recently renovated my garden, to reflect my love of the beach and being outdoors. I can only apologise to all if it was indeed my fault for tempting fate! Thank goodness for tumble dryers and umbrellas!

After all my hard work, my garden now resembles something out of the 80s series The Day of the Triffids.

The good news though is that we have a Bank Holiday weekend coming up... hmmm, but even better – it’s my birthday in June. I adore birthdays as much as the sun. It means that I am alive and kicking! It’s a time I make new plans - do you make resolutions on your birthday?

I was making daily ones on Facebook in February and it kept me going through dreary days of drizzle and drudgery.

They were more aims than the typical resolutions we make, things like, get out of bed, eat healthily and walk. I walked a lot in February but have ground to a halt due to the weather. Perhaps I am part feline when the outdoors isn’t at least 25 degrees, dry, and three-loads-of-washing-on-the-line per day, weather.

Because it is nearly my birthday, my daily resolution will be to walk more, but also to not worry about what Mother Nature is doing outside. I have a coat and wellington boots… and, being a clown I do like to flip adversities on their heads; another way of looking at things: ‘hope for the best, when the worst is expected.’

If you are in Exmouth on Sunday 6 June, I’m running a new outdoor experience: My Mythographical Quest starting at Manor Gardens Exmouth - the beginning of more walking, storytelling and myth-making – sun or no sun.

I was introduced to site-specific walking and mythogeographic walking a few years ago by Dr Phil Smith, who specialises in work around walking, site-specificity, mythogeographies, web-walking, somatics, and counter-tourism. He opened my eyes, ears to seeing the world from new perspectives.

I want to create new stories related to places and spaces I have encountered for years. And after discovering his work, it was if I had been given a fresh pair of spectacles and permission to alter, re-vision and create new narratives that complement my other ventures.

Another six weeks of comedy, character and clowning class begins online on 8 June - massive congrats to the super performers at the end of course gig on Tuesday. Three sets of three minutes for each performer and they nailed it! I’m so proud of you all. And what a fantastic and supportive audience we had, too!

Thanks to all, for all. Have a smashing Bank Holiday weekend and may the sun shine on you.

Cheers from Maggie and the Comedy Matters team :)
