Me, Stewart Lee, and Row B...

Comedy Always Repeats on Me...

This week, I was treated to a trip to see one of my favourite stand ups Stewart Lee at Exeter's Northcott Theatre. Thank you Claire and James. And row B for a brilliant viewing vantage point!

Lee is one of the most prolific users of repetition. And it works – funny old thing – not him, the technique, well him too.

He did reference his age and his unruly body but 53 is a good age – aren’t they all?  He is a snowflake and a bit of a tornado too (chapeau) as his comedy tour name Snowflake/Tornado suggests. Anyway, no more teasing and giveaways. Go see.

I am forever saying to my class members, say it again and again and again as repetition works as a form of exaggeration – one of the staples of comedy. The more you say it the more people laugh – until they stop.

I also love different characters appearing in a set – it mixes it up and enhances interest. By the way, Lee’s mimicry of Alan Bennett (another favourite of mine) was spot on and hilarious. Again. Go see.

My class performed this week – online and they also were belly-achingly brilliant. Bravo everyone for the back-to-back pathos and humour:

Confessions of paying for empty, unused storage boxes for years and years and years; there were also the characters of “Don’t dare hug me” Jenny Generous and crystal pendulum, crystal meths and snail cream spreader Helpful Hattie.
Plus a generous dollop of agony including a Brexit-loving Dyson; a torturing lepidopterist, and fornication. Oh and so much more.

Next ONLINE class starts end of March. Clown class 26 March. Come see?

Join me on Saturday 26 March 10 - 4.30pm for a one day workshop at Exeter Phoenix and create lists of your own that will help you create/discover your own unique clown.

Another! CONTEMPORARY CLOWNING WORKSHOP @exeterphoenix and we cannot wait!

Our next 6 week ONLINE Comedy Course starts on March 30 - take a look at the details here if you're interested in joining us for a round of larfs...

As usual, have a fab week and thanks from Maggie and the Comedy Matters team - cheers :)
